Apple Tart with Julia | Recipe Collaboration

My friend Julia and I met at a food-related event a couple of years ago and ever since we have been collaborating on various projects: recipes, gatherings and editorials. Our friendship was born over food and is sustained through our love and belief in its 'magical' power. It has been comforting and exciting to find someone on a similar journey as myself and to have one another's support along the way. We recently got together and shot a recipe for a classic apple tart.

Sarah & Phil | Lived Spaces | Habitat Series | Montréal, QC

One of my favourite parts about doing this series is that it gives me the opportunity to meet new people. Being welcomed into someone's home with a camera in hand examining and documenting the space and the way they live is a very intimate experience. Gotta love people with an open mind and who are willing to reveal themselves to the outside world.
Last weekend I got the chance to photograph Sarah & Phil's apartment on Saturday and then take a trip to the country together for some apple picking on Sunday. I guess that you could say that we really dove into getting to know each other. Sarah, a lover of botanicals, is not only responsible for greening the apartment but also the co-founder of a magazine dedicated to plants called Bosquet (www. bosquetmagazine.com). As for Phil, he's quite the talented artist and most of the pieces on the walls are created by him. It is nice to see how their individual styles have blended so well together and how they have adapted elements in their space to make it more functional. A well-balanced design hybrid. Merci encore!

Who: Phil & Sarah
People who you share(d) this space with: Walter White jr., our cat!
City: Montréal
Neighbourhood: Plateau Mont-Royal

In three words how would you describe the design, atmosphere/mood of your space?
P: warm, relaxed and woody

What is your favourite room? Why?
S: The office in the front. Most of my plants are there because the room is filled with sunshine all day long. This is also where we work on our projects, so we each decorated our workspaces which makes the room really warm.
P: I'd have to agree on that.

What is the best decorating "find"/DIY in your space?
S: There are so many! Wooden furniture, plants ... but I would say our shelves in the kitchen. We removed the cabinets and I love seeing the porcelain cups and colored plates.
P: This past summer I just built a washing machine cover-up wall/counter. It really changes a lot since we can have a view of the kitchen from every room.

Most treasured item(s) in your space?
S: The Dining Table.
P: The Litterbox. I can't imagine living without it.

What elements are essential to you in creating a space that feels like home?
S: Plants.
P: Custom furnitures.

What is your best memory from this space?
S: When we got Walter!

Weekends are for...
S: Workings on my different projects and going to the eastern townships
P: Seeing friends.

Your favourite Montréal coffee spot is...
S: Our Moka percolator.
P: MELK, on Monkland St. in NDG.

The best thing about the neighborhood you live in is...
S: Laurier park
P: it's proximity to friends, it's centrality to other neighborhood. Also, the subway station is on the corner, that's a big plus in the winter.

A perfect day in Montréal goes like...
S: A bike ride, a trip to the public market to buy flowers, a few stops at garage sales, a dinner at the restaurant and an evening on a terrace with friends
P: Anything that begins with a bacon and eggs breakfast and with a nap in the middle of it. It could be a good workday at the studio or a visit to the museums and galleries.

If you could travel anywhere next, where would it be...
P&S: We have a bunch of good friends that recently left for Vancouver, we would love to get to visit the northern west coast with them.

Summer Part Three: Camping & Cottaging | July & August 2014

It feels like time to clear out the summer archives and share its memories before we move into the new season. Though at times it felt unsettling to be here and there this summer- well more there than here- looking back at these moments it was all worth it. When shooting film I always like reflecting on what I ended up spending a precious frame on. To be honest, sometimes I get why I took a certain photo and other times I can't remember at all. Regardless of my (lack of) memory, in the moment it must of felt right and usually nothing beats that.

Restaurant Day | Sunday August 17th | Montréal, QC

This past Sunday was Montréal's third time participating in Restaurant Day. Originating in Finland, this event is a worldwide food carnival where anyone can set up a restaurant for a day. Restaurants can happen anywhere and some popular spots are homes, yards, parks, street corners and especially in Montréal, alleyways. Aside from being a student I've made most of my other friends in the city through food. I truly believe that food is one of the biggest mobilizers out there and where there is food, people will follow. So, in February when a friend asked me to join her in hosting a pop-up restaurant for this 'new event' coming to Montréal I was in! Though trying to create a cozy and warm! space outdoors in the middle of winter might have been a tad ambitious of us (space heaters cannot out power Mother Nature), we managed to pull off a pretty good indoor version of what we had intended. In April we carried on the tradition and hosted our second pop-up in the alleyway beside my house. We offered a diverse spread of small, homemade bites and created a space that resembled an outdoor living room for people to sit and enjoy both one another and the spring sunshine. Across the street the MTL Kitchen Collective was hosting a restaurant as well and serving up the best beet burgers I've ever tasted! We got to talking about food-related gatherings and our other interests, and decided to keep in touch about potential future collaborations. Their aim is to create community through food by bringing creative culinary events to Montréal and well needless to say this speaks to my heart.

And well it happened! This past Sunday alongside the MTL Kitchen Collective & other friends we hosted a BYOB(lanket) strawberry social in the park. On the menu was homemade biscuits with vanilla cream and local strawberries; chai and mango lassies; and savory galettes made by yours truly. The weather all week had been rainy and cool and it didn't feel overly inspiring to have a picnic. However, on Sunday it pulled through and there was food, blankets and a great group of people! Running a restaurant is hard and tiring work that I won't even try to justify that I understand it from my limited experience. However, I think I get why people preserve and do it. To look out and see satisfied faces makes oven mishaps and preparing dough for hours after work on Friday night totally worth it. Of course, 'I get by with a little help from my friends' and I owe a big thanks to those friends who lent a hand (arranging flowers and transporting galettes) and came out to join us on Sunday.

Stay tuned for recipes!
